Culture and Art in Arezzo: an open-air treasure

Arezzo is a Tuscan city that preserves an artistic and cultural heritage of inestimable value. Walking through its historic center means immersing yourself in centuries of history, among masterpieces of medieval, Renaissance, and contemporary art.

Every street, square, or palace tells stories of artists, patrons, and traditions that have contributed to making Arezzo one of the most fascinating destinations for art lovers. Here you will find museums rich in unique works, galleries celebrating great masters, and iconic places such as the Basilica of San Francesco with the frescoes by Piero della Francesca or the birthplace of Giorgio Vasari.

The itinerary we propose is designed to be experienced on foot, at a relaxed pace, enjoying every detail and allowing yourself to be surprised at every step. Whether you are an art enthusiast or simply curious, Arezzo will give you authentic and unforgettable emotions.

Basilica of San Francesco and the frescoes by Piero della Francesca

The Basilica of San Francesco is one of the most famous places in Arezzo and houses one of the absolute masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance: the Legend of the True Cross by Piero della Francesca. This extraordinary cycle of frescoes, created between 1452 and 1466, fascinates with its perfection of perspective, the brightness of the colors, and the symbolic depth of the scenes.

Each episode narrates, with rare harmony, the story of the Cross of Christ. In addition to the frescoes, the basilica preserves precious works such as the painted Cross by the Master of San Francesco, a testimony of medieval art that further enriches this treasure chest of beauty.

Casa Vasari Museum

The Casa Vasari Museum is the residence that Giorgio Vasari, famous painter, architect, and biographer of artists, purchased in 1541 as his personal refuge in his hometown. Here he decorated every room with a rich iconographic program, celebrating the role of the artist through mythological, biblical, and allegorical themes.

The rooms preserve original frescoes, painted coffered ceilings, and a precious collection of 16th-century works, many created by masters who collaborated with Vasari himself. Completing the visit is the evocative hanging garden, a peaceful corner that offers an intimate glimpse into the private life and refined taste of the Aretine artist.

National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art

Housed in the splendid Palazzo Bruni Ciocchi, the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art tells centuries of artistic history in Arezzo. Its rooms preserve works from the 13th to the 19th centuries: gold-ground panels by Margarito d’Arezzo, frescoes by Spinello Aretino and Parri di Spinello, paintings by Pietro Lorenzetti, Luca Signorelli, and Giorgio Vasari.

There are also Baroque and 19th-century masterpieces, as well as refined Macchiaioli paintings. The museum also boasts one of the most important collections of Italian Renaissance majolica and precious medieval sculptures. A must-see place to understand the richness and variety of art produced in Arezzo over the centuries.

National Archaeological Museum Gaio Cilnio Mecenate and Roman Amphitheater

The National Archaeological Museum of Arezzo, dedicated to Maecenas, stands inside the former monastery of San Bernardo, built on the remains of the Roman Amphitheater dating back to the 2nd century AD. Its 26 rooms recount the history of Arezzo from Etruscan origins to the Roman and Late Antique periods.

Among the most precious finds are the famous coral-red vases (Arretine vasa), Etruscan jewelry, decorative terracotta, and a Greek krater attributed to Euphronios. The amphitheater, visible outside, testifies to the city’s importance in antiquity. A place where archaeology and history intertwine, offering visitors a fascinating journey into the past of one of Tuscany’s oldest cities.

Petrarch’s House

In the heart of ancient Arezzo lies the birthplace of Francesco Petrarch, one of the greatest poets in Italian literature. Here visitors can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the 14th century, exploring the rooms where the famous author of the Canzoniere was born.

Today the house is both a museum and the headquarters of the Petrarch Academy of Letters, Arts, and Sciences. Inside are relics, documents, Renaissance works, and a precious library linked to Petrarchism. From the terrace, visitors can enjoy a splendid view of the city, while outside stands the statue dedicated to the poet, symbolizing the indissoluble bond between Arezzo and its illustrious figure.

“I Colori della Giostra” Museum

The “I Colori della Giostra” Museum is a fascinating interactive journey dedicated to the historic Giostra del Saracino, the chivalric tournament that animates Arezzo twice a year.
Thanks to multimedia technologies, virtual reality, and immersive projections, visitors can relive the unique atmosphere of the event, complete with trumpet fanfares and drum rolls. It is an engaging experience that combines tradition and innovation, perfect for getting to know one of the city’s most beloved and identifying events.

“Palazzo di Fraternita” Museum

Overlooking Piazza Grande, the “Palazzo di Fraternita” Museum tells eight centuries of history of the Fraternita dei Laici, one of the oldest institutions in Arezzo. The building, with its façade that combines Gothic and Renaissance elements, houses a precious artistic heritage: paintings, sculptures, furnishings, and historical documents from the 14th to the 19th centuries.

Among the highlights are frescoes by Spinello Aretino, 15th-century sculptures, and the famous lunar phase clock by Felice da Fossato. Visiting this museum means entering the heart of Arezzo’s social and cultural life, in one of the city’s most representative places.

Municipal Gallery of Contemporary Art

The Municipal Gallery of Contemporary Art of Arezzo is a space dedicated to 20th-century creativity and the most recent artistic expressions.

The Palace of the Fraternita dei Laici: a treasure in the heart of Arezzo

In the heart of Piazza Grande, the Palace of the Fraternita dei Laici stands out as one of the most fascinating historical symbols of Arezzo. Located next to the Logge Vasariane, it was built starting in 1375 and completed in the 16th century based on a design by Giorgio Vasari. The building is a rare example of architecture that harmoniously blends Gothic and Renaissance elements. Its façade is embellished with works of art and an imposing bell tower surmounted by an extraordinary astronomical clock.

Over the centuries, the palace has served civil, religious and cultural functions: it was the seat of the Fraternita, a place of welcome and then the city court. Since 2010, it has housed a museum that collects paintings, sculptures and precious documents related to the history of the city. Visiting this building means immersing yourself in a living testimony of Arezzo’s past, between art, devotion and civic commitment.

A historic building in the heart of Piazza Grande

The Palace of the Fraternita dei Laici overlooks one of the most evocative views of Arezzo: the upper part of Piazza Grande, next to the Logge Vasariane and the apse of the Pieve di Santa Maria. Its location is not accidental but symbolic: it represents the central role that the Fraternita has played in city life since the Middle Ages.

The building is the result of a long architectural process spanning centuries: the Gothic base was built between 1375 and 1377, while the Renaissance crowning and the bell tower with the astronomical clock were added in the 16th century under the direction of Giorgio Vasari. Each architectural element tells a piece of history: the loggia dating back to 1460, the sculptures on the façade, the splayed windows and the imposing portal are visible traces of a civic and artistic identity that still fascinates those who stroll through the historic centre of Arezzo today.

From mercy to art: the legacy of the Fraternita

The Fraternita dei Laici was founded in the 13th century as a city brotherhood with charitable aims: to help the poor, the sick and pilgrims. Officially established in 1262 with a statute issued by Bishop Guglielmino degli Ubertini, it soon became one of the most influential institutions in Arezzo, collecting bequests and donations from nobles, merchants and artisans. In addition to managing hospitals and shelters, the Fraternita invested in culture and art, commissioning prestigious works and contributing to the architectural development of the city.

Emblem of this commitment is the palace that bears its name: the historic seat of the institution, it now houses its rich archive, a museum with extraordinary works and the Casa della Musica (House of Music). Although it remains a secular institution, the Fraternita has always maintained a strong spiritual bond, entrusting itself to the protection of the Madonna della Misericordia, a recurring figure in the works of art that adorn the palace and recount its mission

5 works not to be missed in the Palace of the Fraternita dei Laici

The Palace of the Fraternita dei Laici is not only an architectural treasure trove in the heart of Arezzo, but also a museum that houses some of the most significant masterpieces of the city’s artistic and cultural history. The works on display, including paintings, sculptures and mechanical engineering, recount centuries of devotion, patronage and ingenuity, closely linked to the Fraternita and its benefactors. Visiting this place means embarking on a journey through sacred art and Renaissance science, between the expressive power of Parri di Spinello and the technical mastery of Vasari’s astronomical clock.

The five works we have selected represent the beating heart of the museum itinerary: living testimonies of a past that continues to dialogue with the present. From 15th-century painting to monumental sculpture, passing through mechanical rarities and preparatory drawings, each piece tells a precious fragment of the history of Arezzo and its oldest secular institution.

The Madonna della Misericordia by Parri di Spinello

One of the most representative masterpieces preserved in the Palace of the Fraternita dei Laici is the Madonna della Misericordia con i santi Donato e Gregorio (Our Lady of Mercy with Saints Donatus and Gregory), painted in 1448 by Parri di Spinello, son of the famous Spinello Aretino. The large fresco is located in the Audience Hall, one of the most spectacular rooms in the palace. At the centre of the composition, the Virgin stands facing forward, with her arms outstretched and her cloak spread out to protect the faithful gathered beneath her. Among them are influential figures of the time, benefactors and representatives of the Fraternity.

The work, charged with symbolic power, bears witness to the profound Marian devotion of the institution, which identified with the figure of the Madonna as its guide and protector. With a vigorous style and intense colours, Parri di Spinello manages to blend solemnity and spirituality, leaving an indelible mark on the visitor’s visual memory. A work to be admired and contemplated.

The sculptural group by Bernardo Rossellino

On the façade of thePalace of the Fraternita dei Laici, between the Gothic windows and under the bell tower, there is a sculptural work of great importance: the Madonna della Misericordia con i santi Lorentino e Pergentino (Our Lady of Mercy with Saints Lawrence and Pergentinus), created in 1434 by Bernardo Rossellino. The stone sculpture depicts the Virgin Mary in a central position, with her cloak open to protect the two saints of Arezzo, symbols of the city’s devotion.

The work, located high above the portal, is an expression of the sober and refined style typical of the early Renaissance, and was later flanked by statues of San Donato and San Gregorio, also by the same artist. This sculptural group testifies to the importance of the Fraternita in promoting public works of art as a visible sign of its religious and civil mission. The Madonna, with her protective gesture, stands out in the square as an emblem of faith, welcome and care for the community, remaining one of the symbols of Arezzo to this day.

The Astronomical Clock by Vasari and Felice da Fossato

One of the most fascinating jewels of the Palace of the Fraternita dei Laici is the extraordinary astronomical clock made in 1552 by master clockmaker Felice di Salvatore da Fossato and set in the bell tower.>1552 by master clockmaker Felice di Salvatore da Fossato and set in the bell tower designed by Giorgio Vasari. The only one of its kind in Italy, the clock not only tells the time but also displays complex astronomical information, such as the position of the Sun and Moon and the lunar calendar according to the Ptolemaic system.

The mechanism, operated manually by a system of weights and counterweights, controls a cycle of three bells that ring on the hour and quarter hour. Restored several times, most recently in 2002, it is now in perfect working order. The clock represents the fusion of art, science and faith: an engineering feat that reflects the Fraternita’s ambition to combine beauty and public utility, affirming its secular identity while remaining deeply integrated into the cultural and spiritual fabric of the city.

San Rocco in front of the Palazzo della Fraternita by Bartolomeo della Gatta

Among the most evocative works preserved in the museum of the Palace of the Fraternita dei Laici is the painting San Rocco in front of the Palazzo della Fraternita, created in 1479 by Bartolomeo della Gatta, a prominent painter and architect in the Tuscan Renaissance art scene. The work was commissioned as a votive offering after the end of the plague of 1477, a tragic event that deeply marked the city.

The scene depicts the pilgrim saint, protector against epidemics, portrayed in front of the headquarters of the Fraternita, emphasising the fundamental role of the institution in helping the sick. The painting, rich in architectural and symbolic details, is a testament to the deep integration between art and city life, spirituality and social commitment. Housed in the large central hall of the museum, San Rocco is not only a work of art but also a visual document of the collective memory of Arezzo and the resilience of its community.

The Bartolini Collection and Vasari’s drawing

Among the treasures housed in the Palazzo della Fraternita dei Laici is the extraordinary Bartolini Collection, consisting of approximately 6,000 works donated to the Fraternita by the Arezzo sculptor Ranieri Bartolini (1794-1856). The collection includes paintings, sculptures and an important selection of neoclassical drawings, which are displayed in rotation in the museum rooms. Among the most important pieces is a rare preparatory study by Giorgio Vasari for the fresco Allegoria della Hilaritas, created in 1542 for the Palazzo della Cancelleria in Rome.

This drawing, rediscovered during recent cataloguing work, is a valuable document for understanding the artist’s creative process and his ability to combine technical rigour with allegorical invention. The Bartolini Collection bears witness to the love of art and collecting in the 19th century, enriching the museum’s collection with works of great historical and aesthetic value that illustrate the continuity of Arezzo’s artistic culture from the Renaissance to the modern age.

Arezzo, a city to discover on foot

A historic centre rich in art and tradition:

Before discovering the Church of San Michele, it is important to know that Arezzo is a city that surprises visitors with its authenticity and rich artistic and cultural heritage. Less crowded than other Tuscan destinations, it retains the charm of a lived-in city of art, where every corner tells a story. Founded by the Etruscans and later becoming an important Roman centre, it has passed through the centuries leaving visible traces of its past in monuments, churches, palaces and panoramic views.

Strolling through the historic centre of Arezzo means immersing yourself in a timeless atmosphere, among cobbled alleys, artisan workshops and squares that have been the backdrop for films such as Life is Beautiful. Different eras coexist harmoniously here: from classical antiquity to the Middle Ages, from the Renaissance to the neo-Gothic period, with a common thread of elegance and spirituality permeating every building.

The city is famous for the Basilica of San Francesco with frescoes by Piero della Francesca, Piazza Grande with its irregular architecture, and the Duomo, which dominates the city from above. But in addition to these well-known destinations, Arezzo has many lesser-known treasures that deserve attention. One of these is the Church of San Michele, one of the oldest in the city, located right in the heart of the historic centre.

Corso Italia and the treasures of the historic centre:

The heart of Arezzo beats along Corso Italia, the ancient Borgo Maestro, which crosses the historic centre from north to south, connecting the main points of interest in the city. This elegant uphill street is lined with medieval buildings, historic shops, cafés and churches that tell centuries of history and bear witness to the cultural and religious importance that Arezzo has held over time.

Walking along Corso Italia, you will come across architectural gems such as the Palazzo Pretorio, with its striking façade decorated with coats of arms, and the Pieve di Santa Maria, one of the most fascinating Romanesque buildings in Tuscany. Every step reveals a detail, a doorway, a fresco or a window that unveils the city’s past.

It is in this context that the Church of San Michele stands, overlooking a small square along the street. Despite its central location, it is often overlooked by hurried tourists, remaining a quiet and charming place. However, attentive visitors cannot help but stop to admire its neo-Gothic façade and be intrigued by its thousand-year history, which has its roots in the Lombard era.

This stop is the perfect place to slow down and capture the authentic essence of Arezzo: a city that reveals itself calmly, among ancient stones and hidden details.

The Church of San Michele, a hidden gem among ancient stones:

In the heart of the historic centre of Arezzo, hidden among the imposing architecture of Corso Italia, stands the Church of Saints Michele and Adriano, better known as the Church of San Michele. At first glance, it might go unnoticed, but just pause for a moment to appreciate its simple elegance and the intimate atmosphere that surrounds it.

The church stands in a small square, almost protected from the hustle and bustle of the main street. Its origins probably date back to the Lombard era, between the 7th and 8th centuries, when the cult of the Archangel Michael was particularly widespread. Over time, the building has undergone numerous transformations, passing from Romanesque to Gothic, until it took on its neo-Gothic appearance in the 20th century, which it still retains today thanks to the intervention of architect Giuseppe Castellucci.

Despite the architectural changes and historical vicissitudes, San Michele has managed to maintain a strong and recognisable identity. Its façade, embellished with a modern mosaic depicting Christ the King between Saints Michael and Adrian, leads to an interior that is sober but rich in works of art that tell of centuries of faith and creativity.

Discovering this church means coming into contact with an intimate and lesser-known part of Arezzo. It is an exciting stop, especially because it reveals itself only to those who have the time and desire to look beyond the surface.

From its Lombard origins to its neo-Gothic façade:

The Church of San Michele, now also dedicated to Sant’Adriano, is one of the oldest religious buildings in Arezzo. Its origins probably date back to the Lombard era, between the 7th and 8th centuries, when the cult of the Archangel Michael was widespread among the Germanic peoples. The first documents attesting to its existence date back to the 11th century, and as early as 1095, the church was listed as the property of the Camaldolese monks, with a small monastery attached.

Over time, the building underwent several architectural phases: in 1150, it was renovated in Romanesque style, while in the 14th century, it was enlarged in Gothic style, with the addition of chapels and decorations. At the beginning of the 15th century, it also obtained the title of abbey, confirming its central role in the religious life of the city.

The 16th century marked a period of decline, but in the following century new restoration work began, until the monastery was suppressed in 1652. In 1786, the church was given the additional title of Sant’Adriano. However, its current appearance is due to the work of Giuseppe Castellucci in the early 1930s, who gave it an imposing neo-Gothic façade enriched with a mosaic depicting Christ the King between Saints Michael and Adrian.

Today, every stone of the church tells a story spanning over a thousand years of transformations, spirituality and art.

This medieval village, famous for its timeless atmosphere, is the ideal destination for a day trip during your stay at B&B Cento Passi dal Duomo, in the heart of Arezzo’s historic centre.
Far from mass tourism but rich in wonders, Cortona offers the perfect balance between art, spirituality and nature. In this article, we suggest a one-day itinerary to discover five unmissable stops to savour all the charm of this unique town… just a stone’s throw away.

The MAEC – Museum of the Etruscan Academy and the City of Cortona

In the heart of Cortona, overlooking Piazza Signorelli, the MAEC (Museum of the Etruscan Academy and the City of Cortona) is a must-see for anyone wishing to discover the historical and cultural soul of the city. The museum houses an extraordinary collection of Etruscan artefacts, including the famous Etruscan chandelier from the 5th century BC, and important Roman and medieval artefacts. In addition to the archaeological section, the MAEC houses Renaissance works of art, ancient documents and rooms dedicated to the evolution of the city over time.

It is the perfect place to start your visit, immersing yourself in Cortona’s thousand-year history and capturing all its cultural depth. The rooms are well maintained and rich in detail, ideal for adults, families and history buffs. We recommend visiting in the early hours of the day, then continuing your itinerary outdoors among views, squares and tastings.

The historic squares of Cortona – Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza Signorelli

The heart of Cortona beats between Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza Signorelli, two adjacent urban gems that tell centuries of history and city life. In Piazza della Repubblica stands the impressive Palazzo Comunale, with its spectacular stone staircase and ancient clock tower, symbol of Cortona’s identity. A few steps away is Piazza Signorelli, elegant and airy, dominated by the 19th-century theatre of the same name and the MAEC.

Here, time seems to slow down: it is the ideal place to stop at one of the many cafés with outdoor tables, where you can enjoy an espresso or a glass of wine while admiring the architecture. The two squares are perfect for taking picturesque photographs and breathing in the authenticity of Cortona. Whether you want to admire the art, meet the locals or simply stroll through the narrow streets, this stop will give you genuine emotions in true Tuscan style.

Cortona Cathedral and the Belvedere overlooking the Valdichiana

A few minutes’ walk from the historic centre, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is an unmissable stop on your itinerary in Cortona. Built in the Romanesque period and later enlarged, the church houses precious works of sacred art, including paintings by Signorelli and refined frescoes. The intimate atmosphere and panoramic location make it an ideal place for a short break to reflect and enjoy the beauty.

Leaving the cathedral, follow the path that leads to the nearby Belvedere, a panoramic viewpoint offering spectacular views of the Valdichiana: rolling hills, rows of cypress trees and, in the distance, Lake Trasimeno. It is one of the most photographed places in the city, especially at sunset. Stop for a few minutes, breathe deeply and let yourself be inspired by the wonder of the Tuscan landscape: here, nature and architecture coexist in perfect harmony.

Lunch and local wine tasting

A visit to Cortona is not complete without a food and wine experience that celebrates the authentic flavours of the area. The town is renowned for its wine production, particularly its DOC Cortona wines, including Syrah, Sangiovese and aromatic whites. Numerous wine shops and wine bars in the historic centre offer guided tastings, often accompanied by typical local products such as Tuscan pecorino cheese, artisan cured meats, crostini and extra virgin olive oil.

It is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a relaxed lunch in a traditional trattoria or to take part in a real wine experience in a nearby winery. We recommend booking in advance if you visit Cortona during the busiest months, to ensure you get a table with a view and impeccable service. A moment of taste that will remain in your memories, with good food, wine and the Tuscan atmosphere.

The Hermitage of the Cells – spirituality and silence in the woods

Just 4 km from the centre of Cortona, nestled in a quiet and lush forest, is the charming Eremo delle Celle, one of the most spiritual and evocative places in the area. Founded by St. Francis of Assisi in 1211, the hermitage is still inhabited today by a small community of Capuchin friars and is open to visitors seeking peace and introspection. The walk to reach it is short and pleasant, along shady paths with views of the valley.

Once you arrive, you are greeted by an atmosphere of absolute contemplation, made up of silence, streams and stone architecture perfectly integrated into nature. Here, time seems to stand still. You can visit the cell where St. Francis lived and admire the simplicity of the monastic complex. The Hermitage of the Cells is the ideal place to end your day in Cortona with a moment of quiet, spirituality and wonder.

His most famous work, Le Vite de’ più eccellenti pittori, scultori e architetti italiani (Lives of the most excellent Italian painters, sculptors and architects), laid the foundations of modern art criticism, chronicling the biographies of artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael.

Vasari worked in Florence, Rome and Venice, designing iconic buildings such as the Uffizi and creating frescoes for important Medici palaces.

The Giorgio Vasari House Museum preserves splendid mannerist frescoes painted by the artist and his collaborators, offering visitors an immersive experience in his artistic vision. The main floor, the most decorated, houses rooms of great charm, such as the Sala del Camino, where Vasari depicted himself intent on reading, and the Camera di Apollo e delle Muse, dedicated to the celebration of art.

Particularly striking is the Camera della Fama, with allegorical frescoes extolling the role of the artist in the Renaissance. The museum also has finely painted coffered ceilings and the impressive Corridor of Ceres, embellished with mythological figures. Each room tells a piece of Vasari’s life and cultural legacy.

The picture gallery and the Vasarian Archive: a historical treasure

In addition to the frescoes, the Giorgio Vasari House Museum houses a rich picture gallery, with works by mannerist artists who collaborated with Vasari on the decoration of Francesco I de’ Medici’s Studiolo in Palazzo Vecchio. These include Jacopo Zucchi, Carlo Portelli and Francesco Morandini, who shared his artistic vision.

Another jewel housed in the house is the precious Vasarian Archive, a collection of letters, documents and annotations that offer a unique insight into the artistic life of the 16th century. Among the most important exhibits are 17 autograph letters by Michelangelo, testifying to the bond between the two masters.

The origins of Master Giorgio Vasari and the link with Arezzo

Master Giorgio Vasari was born on July 30, 1511, in Arezzo, a city that profoundly influenced his early artistic and cultural experiences. Son of Antonio Vasari, a textile merchant, and Maddalena Tacci, young Giorgio showed a keen interest in art from an early age. He attended the workshop of Guillaume de Marcillat, celebrated author of the magnificent stained-glass windows of the Cathedral of San Donato. There Vasari learned the basics of drawing and composition. While attending the shop he followed the lessons of the polygraph Giovanni Pollio Lappoli, who provided him with a solid humanistic education. In Arezzo Vasari completed his first architectural works allowing himself to be inspired by Michelangelo’s influences.

Master Giorgio Vasari and his training between Arezzo, Florence and Rome

After his early formative experiences in Arezzo, Master Giorgio Vasari continued his journey in Florence, the beating heart of the Renaissance. Here, thanks to Cardinal Silvio Passerini, he entered the Medici circle and perfected his skills under the guidance of leading artists such as Andrea del Sarto and Baccio Bandinelli. Attending the workshop of these masters, Vasari developed a remarkable skill in drawing and a refined perspective ability, fundamental to his future works. During this period, he also studied letters and humanism under Pierio Valeriano, supplementing his artistic knowledge with a deep literary culture.

Between 1531 and 1532, Vasari moved to Rome with his friend Francesco Salviati, where he deepened his study of ancient monuments and the works of masters such as Michelangelo and Raphael. These formative years, spent between Florence and Rome, represented a decisive phase in the artist’s personal and professional growth, indeed laying the foundations of his Mannerist style.

Vasari architect: from the Uffizi to the Vasarian Loggias

Master Giorgio Vasari’s career as an architect established him as one of the most influential figures of the late Renaissance. Among his most famous works is the Uffizi complex in Florence, designed in 1560 on commission from Cosimo I de’ Medici. The Uffizi, conceived as the seat of the duchy’s administrative offices, is distinguished by its elegance and functionality, harmoniously combining classical and Renaissance architectural elements.

In Arezzo, meanwhile, Vasari left a significant imprint with the Vasarian Loggias, located in Piazza Grande. These loggias, built with understated refinement, blend perfectly with the surrounding architecture, giving the square a solemn and harmonious appearance.

Vasari’s architectural works, characterized by careful attention to detail and the ability to combine aesthetics and practicality, still represent a cultural heritage of inestimable value, testifying to the multifaceted genius of this illustrious artist from Arezzo.

Master Giorgio Vasari painter and his contribution to Mannerism

Master Giorgio Vasari was a prolific and innovative painter, becoming one of the leading exponents of Tuscan-Roman Mannerism. Although often overshadowed by giants such as Michelangelo and Raphael, Vasari was able to distinguish himself through his style rich in narrative detail, articulate compositions, and a strong scenographic component. Among his best-known paintings are the Sala dei Cento Giorni in Rome’s Palazzo della Cancelleria and the Sala Regia in the Vatican, where his narrative skills and taste for complex decoration emerge.

Vasari also excelled in sacred painting, producing altarpieces and frescoes characterized by a lively mannerist expressiveness. In Venice, his influence helped renew the local art scene, leaving a significant imprint.

Despite some criticism for the repetitiveness of the figures, Vasari’s pictorial work fits fully into the Mannerist spirit, establishing him as an important innovator and popularizer of this style in Italy.

The “Lives” and Vasari’s role as an art historian

Giorgio Vasari is universally recognized as the first art historian of the modern era, thanks to his monumental work Le Vite de’ più eccellenti pittori, scultori e architettori. Published in 1550 and reissued with additions in 1568, this work represents a milestone in art historiography. Organized into biographies, The Lives recounts the lives and works of more than 160 artists, tracing a path from Cimabue to the Renaissance.

Vasari’s work was not merely a collection of data, but offered a critical analysis that profoundly influenced the way art was interpreted. The author emphasized the central role of Florence as the cradle of the artistic “rebirth,” coining the term “Renaissance.”

Thanks to his work, many artists found lasting celebrity, while his biographical approach remains an indispensable model for later art and historical studies, making him a true precursor of modern art criticism.

Vasari House in Arezzo: a treasure to discover

In the heart of Arezzo is Master Giorgio Vasari ‘s house, now converted into a museum celebrating the life and work of this illustrious artist. Purchased and decorated by Vasari himself, the residence reflects his refined taste and artistic sensibility. The interiors, embellished with fine frescoes, offer a unique glimpse into his pictorial mastery and Renaissance culture.

Particularly striking is the Camera di Abramo, decorated with biblical scenes with a poetic and harmonious tone, showing the artist’s narrative skill. The house also preserves documents and materials related to the writing of Lives, making it a place of extraordinary historical importance.

Visiting Casa Vasari is an experience that allows you to immerse yourself in the private and professional life of one of the most influential artists of his time, discovering an intimate side of a multifaceted character who was deeply connected to his hometown.

Santa Maria delle Grazie: an ancient spring between myth and history

Santa Maria delle Grazie has its roots in the distant past, when the site was home to a sacred spring dedicated to the god Apollo, a symbol of healing and light. During the Etruscan-Roman period, the spring was a destination for rituals related to its therapeutic properties, attracting worshippers from all over the region.

Over time, the place took on the name Fons Tecta, continuing to be frequented even in the early Middle Ages for healing practices, particularly against childhood ills. However, with the rise of Christianity, the ancient pagan cult came into conflict with the new religion.

This conflict marked the beginning of a transformation, culminating with the arrival of St. Bernardine of Siena and the subsequent birth of the shrine as we know it today.

The Turning Point of St. Bernardine of Siena

In 1425, St. Bernardine of Siena arrived in Arezzo to preach during Lent and clashed with the deep-rooted traditions associated with the Fonte Tecta.

Despite his attempts to destroy it, he was thwarted by local noble families and forced to leave the city. He returned in 1428, determined to put an end to the pagan rites, and this time he succeeded, thanks to the support of a group of faithful armed with determination.

In place of the spring, St. Bernardino had an oratory built, a symbol of Christianity’s victory over ancient beliefs. In 1430, Parri di Spinello decorated the oratory with a fresco of “Our Lady of Mercy,” which became an icon of protection and faith for the people of Arezzo.

The construction of the shrine of Santa Maria delle Grazie

The growing influx of the faithful made the oratory built by St. Bernardino insufficient to accommodate all the devotees. Between 1435 and 1444, a new church was built, designed by Domenico del Fattore, which combined late Gothic and Renaissance elements.

The structure, with its single nave and cross vaults, represented an important architectural development for the time. After the canonization of St. Bernardine in 1450, a chapel dedicated to the saint was added on the right side of the church, further enriching the complex.

The church became not only an important place of worship but also a symbol of artistic and spiritual rebirth for Arezzo, reflecting the harmony between faith and architecture.

The loggia of Benedetto da Maiano: Renaissance elegance

Between 1477 and 1490, the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie was enriched by a loggia designed by Benedetto da Maiano, which represents one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Arezzo.

The portico, composed of fifteen arches supported by slender Corinthian columns, frames the facade with harmonious lightness. Inspired by the proportions of Brunelleschi’s Ospedale degli Innocenti, the portico combines elegance and functionality, enhancing the supremacy of voids over solids.

This structure fascinated artists and poets, including Gabriele D’Annunzio, who called it an “aerial loggia.” Today, the portico is not only an architectural masterpiece, but also a symbol of the artistic transformation that characterized the Renaissance in Arezzo.

The treasure of Santa Maria delle Grazie: the altar of Andrea della Robbia

Inside the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie is one of the masterpieces of the Renaissance. It is of course the marble altar by Andrea della Robbia, created between 1487 and 1493 with the help of his sons.

This altar, that holds the fresco of the “Madonna of Mercy” by Parri di Spinello, is an extraordinary work of art in terms of richness and detail. Statues of St. Donato, St. Bernardino and the martyrs Lorentino and Pergentino stand out in the center, while the upper lunette depicts the Madonna and Child between angels.

Putti, cherubs’ heads and a festoon of fruit in polychrome glazed terracotta complete the work, making it unique. The altar is an example of how art and devotion can merge into one sublime creation.

A journey into history through art

Santa Maria delle Grazie is a place where history and art are inextricably intertwined. Frescoes by Lorentino d’Andrea, a disciple of Piero della Francesca, decorate the walls of the church, depicting significant episodes such as Pope Sixtus IV granting indulgences.

These paintings, characterized by a profound Piero Francesca influence, tell the story of the link between art and spirituality in the Renaissance. The 1747 wooden choir in the apse testifies to an artistic evolution that spans the centuries, further enriching the sanctuary.

Although some works have been transferred to the Museum of Medieval and Modern Art in Arezzo, the sanctuary retains its authenticity, offering visitors a unique experience: an exciting journey through centuries of faith, beauty and culture.

Hundred Steps from the Cathedral: your ideal starting point

Located in the heart of Arezzo’s historic center, the B&B Cento Passi dal Duomo offers a prime location for discovering the wonders of the city, including the shrine of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Just a few minutes’ walk from major historical and artistic attractions, our B&B is the perfect choice for those who wish to experience Arezzo’s rich culture.

Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art and the Bishop’s Palace in Arezzo: a few introductory words

The Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art of Arezzo (MuDAS) and the Bishop’s Palace are two places of great historical and cultural significance, located right in front of the Cathedral of Arezzo.

The Bishop’s Palace, built in the 13th century on the initiative of Bishop Guglielmino degli Ubertini, has been the residence of the bishops of Arezzo over the centuries and has undergone numerous transformations, particularly between the 16th and 18th centuries, taking on the elegance that distinguishes it today.

The Diocesan Museum, founded in 1950 and moved to the Bishop’s Palace in 2011, houses an extraordinary collection of sacred art that includes sculptures, paintings, illuminated manuscripts, vestments and goldsmithing. This collection offers visitors a journey through centuries of art and spirituality, illustrating the religious and cultural vitality of the city and the Diocese of Arezzo.

To visit MuDAS and the Bishop’s Palace is to immerse oneself in Arezzo’s history, surrounded by unique masterpieces and precious evidence of the past.

History of the Bishop’s Palace: from medieval origins to Renaissance renovations

The Bishop’s Palace of Arezzo has a rich and fascinating history dating back to the 13th century, when it was built at the behest of Bishop Guglielmino degli Ubertini. Located opposite the cathedral, this palace was destined to become the center of Arezzo’s ecclesiastical power, symbolizing the Church’s influence over the city and territory.

Over the centuries, the palace was expanded and transformed, especially during the Renaissance period.

Between the late 16th century and the 18th century, Bishop Pietro Usimbardi initiated a radical renovation, renovating the building to give it a more elegant and stately appearance, in line with the noble residences of the time. The changes included elaborate decorations and frescoes, created by Arezzo artist Teofilo Torri, which further enriched the interior.

This architectural and artistic heritage has been preserved to this day, offering visitors an insight into Arezzo’s religious and artistic history.

Medieval and Renaissance works of art in the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art

The Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art of Arezzo (MuDAS) offers a unique experience, collecting works of art dating back to the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The collection is spread over five thematic rooms that house precious paintings, sculptures, illuminated manuscripts and liturgical objects from the territory of the Diocese.

One of the main attractions is the three rare wooden crucifixes, which date from the late 12th and early 13th centuries and testify to the skill of the Aretine masters of the time in the art of carving.

Subsequent rooms take visitors through different artistic periods and religious themes, such as the Annunciation and the works of great local artists. Notable among them is Bartolomeo della Gatta, a Florentine Camaldolese painter whose original vision and deep spirituality emerge in his paintings.

Each room is dedicated to a specific theme or artist, allowing visitors to explore the richness of Tuscan sacred art and the evolution of style and technique over the centuries.

Paintings by Giorgio Vasari and other renowned artists

Among the wonders of MuDAS in Arezzo are the masterpieces of Giorgio Vasari, a distinguished painter and architect from Arezzo, famous for his contributions to Renaissance art and for being one of the first art historians.

In the museum, visitors can admire the magnificent processional banner made by Vasari for the Compagnia dei Peducci in 1549, which masterfully depicts the Preaching of the Baptist and the Baptism of Jesus. This work demonstrates Vasari’s ability to combine compositional rigor and expressive power.

In addition to Vasari’s works, the MuDAS collection also includes contributions by other great artists, such as Luca Signorelli, who is present with a predella illustrating sacred episodes. Among the masterpieces on display is a large Vasari tondo, originally part of a canopy, depicting the Madonna of Mercy.

These works, iconic of local artistic production, reflect the richness of Tuscan sacred art and the enduring influence of these artists on Arezzo’s cultural heritage.

The Peace of Siena and the liturgical treasures of the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art

Among the most fascinating collections in Arezzo’s MuDAS are the liturgical treasures, precious testimonies to the faith and craftsmanship that characterize the history of the diocese. Prominent among them is the famous Peace of Siena, a masterpiece of 15th-century Franco-Flemish goldsmithing, donated to Siena Cathedral by Pope Pius II and transferred to Arezzo in 1799.

The Peace of Siena, with its decorative complexity and technical refinement, is one of the most valuable pieces in the collection and represents a symbol of the bond between the cities of Arezzo and Siena.

In addition to the Peace of Siena, the Diocesan Museum preserves a large collection of sacred objects, including vestments, wooden sculptures, and terracottas of great value. These objects, made of precious materials and elaborate finishes, were not only used in religious celebrations, but also tell the stylistic evolution of Tuscan sacred art.

The collection represents an immersion in religious history, making the museum a must-see for those wishing to explore the art and spirituality of the area.

Main floor: the Quadreria Vescovile and the Camera dei Papi

The main floor of the Bishop’s Palace, which opened to the public in 2016, is an evocative stop that enriches a visit to MuDAS with fascinating historical environments. Here it is possible to admire the Bishop’s Picture Gallery, a collection of paintings covering a time span between the 16th and 19th centuries, an expression of the devotion and aesthetics of the time.

The rooms, frescoed by Arezzo painter Teofilo Torri, are elegantly decorated, giving the rooms a solemn atmosphere.

A place of particular interest is the Camera dei Papi, a room set up to welcome popes visiting Arezzo.

This space has hosted important figures of the papacy, including Pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI, becoming a symbol of hospitality and devotion. Visitors can breathe in the air of the city’s ecclesiastical and cultural history, immersed in an artistic context rich in frescoes and antique furnishings that make the main floor a meeting point of art, faith and tradition.
