The Cathedral of Arezzo is the main place of Catholic worship in the city and the cathedral of the diocese of Arezzo-Cortona-Sansepolcro. It is located on the top of the city hill, where an ancient early Christian church once stood and, probably, the city’s acropolis.

St. Domenico
The Basilica of San Domenico in Arezzo, declared a minor basilica in 1960 by Pope John XXIII, houses the famous Crucifix painted by Cimabue in his youthful phase, considered a masterpiece of thirteenth-century painting. The canvas is located in front of the presbytery.

Medici fortress

The Medici Fortress in Arezzo, located on the Colle di San Donato, represents an example of 16th century military architecture. With an irregular pentagonal layout, the fortress fits perfectly into the surrounding terrain, with bastions of different layouts and a notably high slope. Located on the Prato esplanade (305 m), it offers a panoramic view of the city, the Arno valley, the Pratomagno massif and Alpe di Catenaia.

Saint Francesco

The Basilica of San Francesco in Arezzo, elevated to minor basilica by Pope Pius XII in 1955, houses the famous Stories of the True Cross by Piero della Francesca in its chapel. Furthermore, the basilica is also a state museum under the direction of the Polo Museale della Toscana. To access the Bacci chapel, a mandatory reservation is required, since admissions are limited in time slots.
The Pieve

The parish church of Santa Maria in Arezzo is one of the most important places of worship, characterized by an architectural beauty and complexity that place it in a period of transition between Romanesque and Gothic. Defined in ancient sources as “Plebs Sancte Marie in Gradibus”, the pieve has often been confused with another church, Santa Maria in Gradi, a monastery dependent on the Camaldolese abbey of Agnano. However, the parish church of Santa Maria stands out in the Italian architectural panorama for its uniqueness.

Piazza Grande

Piazza Grande in Arezzo is the beating heart of the city, built around 1200 and home to the famous Giostra del Saracino, an ancient equestrian tournament of medieval tradition. With its inclined trapezoidal shape, designed for the outflow of rainwater, the square is located in the center of the medieval city and has been called over the centuries with various names, such as “platea porcorum” and “platea Communis”.

Vasari house

Casa Vasari in Arezzo, in via XX Settembre 55, is the residence of Giorgio Vasari, famous painter, architect and art historian. The building boasts frescoed rooms of great value and is managed by the Polo Museale della Toscana under the control of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities, which became the Regional Directorate of Museums in December 2019.

Petrarch house

The Borgo dell’Orto in Arezzo is the homeland of the great poet Francesco Petrarca, one of the greatest in the history of humanity. You will be able to visit the fourteenth-century rooms in which this genius, together with Dante Alighieri and Giovanni Boccaccio, wrote the history of Italian language and literature. When Petrarch was born in Arezzo on Monday 20 July 1304, Dante Alighieri was also in the city, having been exiled there along with Francesco’s father, his great friend Ser Petracco, both exiled from Florence.

State Museum

The Palazzo delle Logge is a historic building located in the Piazza Grande of Arezzo, dating back to the 16th century. It was used as the residence of the city rulers, then as a theater and today as an exhibition space. The main façade is characterized by a series of round arches, while inside there are important works of art such as the Madonna del Conforto by Cimabue and the Madonna col Bambino by Andrea della Robbia.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
